  • Saves 3%–5% on fuel
  • Balances fuel tank pressure
  • Protecting the Activated Carbon Canister

EVAP Purge Valve Replacement Guide

  1. Check Purge Valve Function & OBD-ll scanner for Codes (e.g., PO440, P0441, PO443).
  2. Locate the Purge Valve.
  3. Disconnect the Electrical Connector.
  4. Use Pliers to Loosen the Hose Clamps.
  5. Twist and Pull the Hoses Off the Purge Valve, Remove Vacuum Hoses.
  6. Remove Mounting Screws / Fasteners, Unscrew or Unclip the Purge
    Valve from Bracket.
  7. Reinstall the New Purge Valve in the Reverse Order of Removal.

Post-Installation Verifcation

  1. Check fault codes with the OBD-ll scanner.
  2. Road Test: Drive for 10-15 minutes. Rescan to ensure codes do not

Frequently asked questions

What does an EVAP purge valve do?

1. Lock in gasoline vapors to prevent them from directly polluting the air.
2. Send the vapors to the engine to burn at the right time, saving fuel and cutting emissions.
3. Balance the pressure inside the fuel tank.
4. Fix issues like fuel spraying or weird sucking noises when opening the cap.
5. How it works: Gasoline evaporates → Activated carbon canister absorbs and stores it → When the car is running, the solenoid valve opens → Vacuum sucks the vapors → Engine burns and uses them.

How do I know if my purge valve is bad?

1. Check for Abnormal Fuel Tank Pressure

After turning off the engine and letting the vehicle sit for about 10 minutes, slowly loosen the fuel cap.

Strong vacuum release or noticeable pressure release: May indicate an EVAP system problem, including a possible faulty purge valve.
A slight release of air pressure:Usually indicates normal EVAP system operation.

---

2. Check for Refueling Problems

If the fuel nozzle frequently clicks off during refueling or you have difficulty filling the fuel tank, a clogged **charcoal canister** or faulty **EVAP purge valve** may be the cause.

---

3. Scan for EVAP Trouble Codes

Use an OBD-II scanner to check for related trouble codes.

Common EVAP codes include:

P0443 – EVAP Purge Valve Circuit Malfunction
P0444 – EVAP Purge Valve Circuit Open
P0451 – EVAP Pressure Sensor Performance Issue
P0457 – EVAP System Leak Detected (Fuel Cap Loose/Missing)

These codes may indicate an issue with the purge valve or other EVAP components.

---

4. Bench Test the EVAP Purge Valve (Most Accurate Method)

For a more accurate test:

1. Remove the purge valve from the vehicle.
2. Connect the valve to a 12V power source (vehicle battery).
3. Listen for a clicking sound when power is applied.
4. Check airflow through the valve:

Without power: The valve should normally remain closed and block airflow.
With power applied: The valve should open and allow airflow.

If the valve does not click or cannot properly control airflow, it may need replacement.

Is this part easy to install?

Installing the solenoid valve is pretty simple, just replace the original part. If there was a fault code before, use the OBD to clear it, and take a short test drive—if the light doesn’t come back on, you’re done.
Quick troubleshooting (for fast fixes if problems appear right after installation):
Check engine light: make sure the plug is secure and the hoses aren’t leaking or disconnected.
Idle shaking: most likely a vacuum leak or the intake/outlet hoses are reversed.
Still misfiring: the charcoal canister is clogged, and it needs to be replaced at the same time.

What a turd

Failed almost immediately

Three several emission system fault codes

Doesn't work. At least not for 2nd Gen MDX. I replaced the purge solenoid as it's commonly associated with tighten fuel cap dash warning messages. Well, after installing this, I not only got the tighten fuel cap message, but also several emission system fault codes. I installed the old solenoid and the fault codes went away. Physically, this part fits fine, but it won't work on 2nd gen MDX. Aside from fluids and oil filter, stick with genuine OEM Honda parts for anything related to the engine.

Low quality. Didn't last.

This valve lasted a few weeks before the codes came back. I had to buy OEM to fix the issue.

It didn't fix my problem fuel system EVAP leak on a 2008 Acura MDX. I don't know if it's working or not. Probably best to buy oem.

It passed the functionality test.

Evap purge solenoids I usually only buy brand names. I have dealt with a number of new ones that were faulty. So are so easy to test before installation. This one passes as a functional part. The six reviews were positive so I took the chance and it payed off. Many of the reviews of the slightly cheaper confirmed my fears. This one passes.
